Summary
David had talked his way onto the patrol and while he was doing that he had felt like a canny operator, working his odds and reading the room. Of course he was just being led where Liebgott wanted him to go, but that was fine. There was a whole chain of men in charge of telling David what to do; at least Liebgott had transparent motives and knew what was going on.

Summary
John looked at him and said, “Hey, Buck. Tell me something.”
Gale, obliging because it cost him nothing, said, “Yeah? What do you wanna know?”
“Tell me the worst thing you ever did.”
“Bucky.” Gale was looking at him with attention now, trying to figure out his angle. “What?”
“Come on, Buck, gimme a baseline here. What’s the worst thing you ever did? You tell me and I’ll tell you.”
In a brief rush of careless honesty, Gale said, “Got bucked off a horse when I was a kid. Probably that."
“Yeah, that’s you, Buck! That’s you. Jesus, bud. Worst thing you ever did was fuckin’ fall down.”

Summary
John got home about ten minutes late to see Gale sitting barefoot on his porch steps, looking out at the lawn. It was a beautiful summer evening; Gale and Marge’s sensible car was in their driveway, and Marge was in Chicago for a conference. Their neighbors had mostly stopped setting off fireworks, but not completely. It looked like the cover of the Saturday Evening Post, except that Gale was pretty clearly fucking losing it.

Summary
Gale set his forehead on the backs of his hands and thought about what it would mean to have John inside him. The idea of it twisted in his chest, twinging at his breastbone, distracting him from the tense nervousness in the air.

Summary
"We must expect great innovations to transform the entire technique of the arts, thereby affecting artistic invention itself and perhaps even bringing about an amazing change in our very notion of art."
- Paul Valéry, PIÈCES SUR L’ART
"La Conquète de l’ubiquité," Paris.Qtd. by Walter Benjamin, Illuminations, "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction," trans. Harry Zohn, ed. Hannah Arendt, p. 217. Harcourt Brace Jovanovich by arrangement, New York, 1968.
"...at the periphery, an annular building; at the center, a tower; this tower is pierced with wide windows that open onto the inner side of the ring; the periphery building is divided into cells, each of which extends the whole width of the building; they have two windows, one on the inside, corresponding to the windows of the tower; the other, on the outside, allows the light to cross the cell from one end to the other. All that is needed, then, is to place a supervisor in a central tower and to shut up in each cell a madman, a patient, a condemned man, a worker or a schoolboy."
- Michel Foucault, Discipline and Punish: The Birth of Prison, trans. Alan Sheridan, p. 200. Vintage Books, New York, 1977.

To say that he had noticed Liebgott would be a statement, and it would be true, but it also would not fully capture the situation.

sharp & illuminating & precise. ow. shares my preoccupation with what i have been calling the vampire money.mp3 problem but with incredible depth & thoughtfulness & an intensely present lestat narratorial voice. anyway i am going to reread this like four times probably it is genius but it did make me need to get up & pace. my favorite part is lestat crying about judy blume but there are many memorable moments that i keep turning over in my mind, although generally they are painful (lestat being mean to louis about woody allen; lestat driving, outside his own body, terrifying). also i love lestat's glasses. story of all time

Summary
Obviously, truth is stranger than fiction, and there’s always going to be edge cases in the real world, but for our purposes: just how realistic is Armand’s tragic backstory?
Judging by the number of retweets/reblogs on this post and others like it, fannish opinion seems to be “not very”. But honestly? It’s not that far-fetched.
Or: a fannish academic does a deep dive into the most controversial character in Daniel Molloy’s new novel.
