Shane nips at Ilya’s bottom lip. “I don’t want to think about you dying. I need you, Ilya. I know you can think about it, but I need you.”
Ilya cups Shane’s face, firmly holding his head in place. “I am not going anywhere. You have me.”
Shane groans, closing his eyes. “I can’t – I don’t want to think about it.”
“Then stop thinking,” Ilya tells him. He keeps his voice soft, but he knows Shane understands it’s an order by the slight nod he gives.

“Okay,” Ilya says, trying to draw steadying breaths. “Why are you hungry? You did not eat? Drink, I mean?”
Shane continues to shake his head.
“Oh, Shane,” Ilya says, pulling him into his arms. “You have to have blood, no?”
“It kills people. Don’t you care?”
“No,” Ilya says, surprised that it’s not a lie.
