Summary
The International Prospect Cup, 2008— Canada’s Shane Hollander, Russia’s Ilya Rozanov. Vying for third place against the United States, Switzerland’s young phenom, Luca Haas.
When Luca Haas is drafted to the Ottawa Centaurs two years after Hollander is drafted to the Metros and Rozanov is drafted to the Raiders, chance has it that he becomes good friends with both. When both start talking about the other— about Montreal Jane and Boston Lily— Luca puts two and two together. And so, like a good friend, he listens, meddles when it is appropriate— and Hollander and Rozanov become Shane and Ilya.

Luca’s being bear-hugged by Rozanov from behind, so much so that his weight is nearly entirely supported by the man, his toes barely touching the ground. Luca’s laughing, the noise resembling something more of a giggle, as Rozanov peppers kisses on the side of his neck, then ears, nipping at the skin. “Hey,” he’s grumbling, a smile evident in his voice.
And Hollander. He’s off to the side, pausing from whatever task he’s doing to watch them. There’s nothing near shock, disgust. The sheer amount of adoration in his eyes is something they’ve only seen reserved for Rozanov— and.
And LaPointe blinks, steps back so slowly he won’t make any noise, turns around, and leaves.

“Hi,” Luca says, apologetic. “Sorry I’m late.”
Ilya turns his head, then blinks. Shane follows his line of sight, expression shifting.
There’s a sharp line of eyeliner across Luca’s waterline, smeared a little on the bottom. Under the lighting, the minuscule amount of white glitter dabbed at the corner and bottom of eyes twinkles. His shirt is tightly fit, a little sheer, cut off just above his black pants. There’s a line of skin between his shirt and pants, the smallest peek of a thin, black tattoo visible on his hip. Silver glints: there’s a bout of jewelry scattered across his body— earrings, a plastic Casio watch, a necklace hanging from his neck.
“You look like you could ruin someone’s life,” LaPointe blurts out.

Summary
Shane is in a post-game interview when his world stops.
He’s just answered a question about Montreal’s offensive strategy going into the game. Clean passes, avoid penalties, draw defenders wide. It had worked and the Voyagers had beat Colorado soundly, 4-1. Shane had scored two of the goals and assisted on a third.
Usually, Shane would be eager to boast about the win to Ilya. But ever since their fight- since Ilya told Shane to leave- winning feels hollow. Losing feels better, somehow. As if Shane deserves to lose after being so selfish. Ilya gave up everything for him- his home, his team, and to some extent- his happiness. Hockey. Ilya gave up hockey- good hockey- for Shane.
A ripple goes through the room of reporters. Shane swears he hears the word ‘Ottawa’ and ‘crash’. But no one is paying attention to him anymore.
“What’s going on?” he asks into the microphone, feeling strange at the role reversal. Usually, he’s the one being asked questions.
No one answers. And this time he knows that he hears the word ‘Ottawa’ and ‘Centaurs’.

The intonation was just as he remembered, but the voice was much deeper.He turned and felt himself short circuit. It took every ounce of willpower to not let his jaw drop cartoonishly to the floor. Shane would recognize his individual features anywhere, even after 5 years. But it was as if someone had snapped their fingers and the smug, silly Russian boy who had been attached to Shane's hip for 3 summers was transformed into some sort of fucking Adonis right before his eyes.

And yeah, Shane knew that Ilya hadn’t been okay last time he was in Russia, but Ilya had had the very real excuse of a funeral to blame things on. Ilya had downplayed it as much as he could, and Shane hadn’t been there, he’d heard the fatigue and he’d seen Ilya’s tired smile, but he hadn’t felt the way Ilya’s hands were cold the entire time he was there, hadn’t seen through the screen the way Ilya dropped eight pounds in three weeks, hadn’t kept time when there were twenty hours in Ilya’s day instead of something closer to sixteen. Or, on the flip side, for the week or two after, when there had been approximately ten conscious hours in a day.
It was one thing to see something. It was another to feel it in your hands.
Ilya and Shane are so, so happy for their first year married. They’re playing in Ottawa together, they’re fucking winning, they’re together and out.
So now, after a year, Ilya should be fine. He should be great. He should not be flinching at small noises or nearly punching people off the clock or feeling like he’s drowning whenever he’s not on the ice.

Shane’s anxiety takes a quick backseat to annoyance once more, at being handled like a child instead of a grown man, like he hasn’t been doing this just as long as Ilya, like he needs someone to tell him when to take a break.
Like he deserved to have everything taken away from him because he couldn’t handle it to start with.
“I’m fine,” he says, voice icy.
The step he takes away is too big, farther than he meant to get from Ilya’s side, and the air between them feels both charged and icy.
He isn’t quite bold enough to try and fix it.
