This is a slow-burn, character-driven ensemble AU that dwells a lot on the relationships and interiorities of the cast. It includes themes like friendship, family, romance, moral complexity, hurt/comfort, trauma/healing, humour, tragedy, etc.—basically the entirety of the emotional reality of children being asked to fight a secret war.
If I've done my job right, the canon cast should feel like deeper, more real versions of themselves at the core of their being, though not necessarily exactly the same as before. Everyone also has secrets. Except maybe one person. Probably. No promises. ;)
OCs are present and some are quite significant. They change parts of the dynamic, but are not intended to outshine anyone, nor make anyone redundant.
This is a long-haul fic. The intention is to run it from a changed beginning to a very different kind of end: the natural progression of this particular AU, whatever happens. It might take a while, but I think it'll be a lot of fun along the way. :)
