“But if we do it again…” Sebastian hums, fingers tapping quick against his jaw, habitually restless. “I don’t know if you can handle it, what you’re asking for.”
Jacob can tell he’s being goaded. He’s played this game before. He practically invented this game. “And what is it that I apparently can’t handle?”
“The pretty boy treatment,” says Sebastian, and a small part of Jacob stirs, a breeze shifting over embers.

The year is 2049. It has been twenty-seven years since the launch of the Hail Mary. It has been a year since the arrival of the Beetle probes and restoration of the sun, with the Hail Mary itself expected to arrive soon.
It has been a year and four months since the launch of the Jupiter Orbital Initiative (JOI) VII, a mission designed to collect data about the potential resources held by Jupiter and its moons. Where once it was another desperate gamble by humanity to find something that might help them survive as the sun dimmed, its purpose has since changed shape; now, it is simply another endeavor of science, and a way by which the Hail Mary may safely return home.
However, unlike previous missions in JOI program, the JOI VII is a manned research station.
Well. It’s got a sentient being aboard, anyway.

Despite his initial reservations, Grace is excited to be returning to Earth, and even more so to introduce it to Rocky; it really seems like Earth is ready to welcome the Hail Mary with open arms- heck, they were even given a pit stop in the form of the JOI VII! But why does the JOI VII commander look exactly like him? And why is he so cagey about his past? -

It was hard to gander how long Grace was on Erid when Simon came along. He could try measuring it out using the Earth’s Gregorian calendar like he did on the Hail Mary, but that’s when he still had a “lights out” timer and didn’t live on a planet with a very different yearly calendar. Teaching little eridians has forced him to adapt to their schedule more than his.
Where was he going with this?
Right! Simon.
He still hadn’t met him yet.
Or Rocky and other eridians find a wormhole and then an injured human man! They bring him to Erid and quarantine him to get him nice and healthy, but slowly find out he’s much different than their beloved science teacher.

During their journey back to Erid, Grace and Rocky find themselves in a starless void. At first they assume there must be a scientific explanation, but when they find a man welded into a submarine they realize things are far worse than they imagined.

Grace wakes to the sound of Mary and Rocky talking over each other. Blinking away the haze of sleep, Grace groans as he tries to focus on understanding what the heck is going on. Given Rocky’s voice is both closer and louder, his brain parses what he’s saying first.
“Grace, what’s that mean, question? What’s going on, question?”
Ok, not the most helpful. Sitting up, sleep properly leaves Grace’s mind as he listens to the message on the overhead.
“Forward star detection, lost. Aft star detection, lost. Starboard star detection, lost. Port star detection, lost. Ventral star detection, lost. Dorsal star detection, lost. Autopilot offline.” Mary says, repeating the message.
The exterior cameras on the Hail Mary use the positions of the stars around it to calculate it’s own position. That’s how the autopilot knows when to make course corrections.

I wish I could share that optimism. I try of course, but there's only so much a guy can do on his death bed before it starts to become a bit of a chore to stay happy and hopeful all the time."
Rocky and Grace make it to Erid eventually. The only problem is that Grace never actually thought he was going to live to see it, now he actually has to figure out what to do for the rest of his life.

Grace has a problem. He's not sure if it's something he wants to fix.
Turns out, he’s still addicted. But this time, there are no substances involved. He’s doing this on his own, out of sheer will, rooted off his self-hatred. He’s addicted to something else: letting himself deteriorate. Letting himself lay awake late at night in discomfort. Letting himself cry because this is the only thing that gives him a sliver of control. Taking his new chance for granted because self-sabotage has always won over everything else.
